Art and Artists in the South of France

On a vacation in the south of France, we were able to look for the places known to us through the artists who worked there. We spent a week in walled Avignon

and from there we visited the Roman Pont du Gard, as well as Arles and St. Remy, both associated with Vincent van Gogh.

Then we spent a week in Aix-en-Provence, where Paul Cezanne lived and worked. We saw Mt. Ste. Victoire from every side.

Finally we went to Nice, on the Cote d’Azur and saw the museums of Matisse and Chagal, as well was places like St. Paul where Chagall spent his last years.

For the entire story and lots of examples of what we saw — compared with what the artists painted, click here for the slide show.
